St. Lawrence County lawmakers approve gas stations for highway outposts | St. Lawrence County

POTSDAM — St. Lawrence County lawmakers unanimously passed a resolution at Monday’s finance committee meeting to approve construction of fuel stations at freeway outposts in Lisbon, Russell and Potsdam.

“The new fuel systems are needed at every location to power county vehicles,” Donald R. Chambers, superintendent of highways for the county, said Tuesday by phone.

The service stations at the Lisbon and Potsdam sites will be brand new, but the one in Russell replaces an old fuel tank that is still in use. Indeed, all the highway outposts in Lisbon and Potsdam are new, but the one in Russell is built on top of an existing smaller outpost.

“For Russell, we used the existing land where we had a very small building and just outdoor sand storage and outdoor equipment storage, so we used that land as space for the new buildings,” Mr. Chambers.

He said the new fuel systems should be live at all three sites within the next few months.

“The current facility we have in Russell, we are fully operational there using the old fuel system, and it serves our needs very well,” he said.

The Lisbon site is at 522 County Route 28A and the Russell facility is at 3896 County Route 24. Both of these road outposts are complete except for the installation of the new fuel systems.

The Potsdam outpost, 7074 Route 11, is still under construction. Indeed, a change of venue delayed the project by about a year.

“The original contract called for all three new outposts to be built at the same time,” Chambers said. “However, due to the change in location of the Potsdam outpost, the offer was made a year later, and therefore all bids and on-site meetings had to be changed to match the new location. “

That necessitated a new contract with new contractors, which county lawmakers also approved on Monday, authorizing the president to sign additional agreements with architect Brooks Washburn for additional services.

Mr Chambers said construction should be completed by the end of the year.

“Right now we are about to pour the concrete floors in the main building, and the concrete walls and floors are being done in the salt storage, so they will be installing the walls and trusses on the salt storage. salt here in the next few days,” he said. “It is mainly concrete foundations and walls that are in place at this stage.
